Mnemonic Series I

This body of work consists of experiments with a variety of substances reacting with acrylic paint. These resist reactions produce spontaneous and often unpredictable results.

The works are based on my photographic studies of the Curragh in Co.Kildare, located near to where I live. They are based on my memories and experiences of this place, and call into question the idea of memory, specifically in relation to the way the human brain remembers images. The images of the landscape become distorted and twisted through the reaction of the paint with the substances, corresponding closely to the way that the human brain often distorts the images in our memory banks. These memories, like the reactions of the paint, can never truly be reproduced.
