Statement

In my artwork I have engaged with a wide variety of ideas and concepts. My choice of medium has been similarly varied, changing to reflect the concept I am working with. Each project often consists of multiple works, frequently engaging with a range of different media, linked by specific themes and meanings. Through research and production, new areas of interest arise and lead to the next body of work. The mediums I have engaged with include painting, photography and sculpture.

My current work is linked primarily by the theme of ‘visual perception’. I have been investigating visually the processes of the brain, specifically in relation to the perception of visual information. To do so, I have produced a series of experimental ‘devices’. These devices are a new take on traditional optical apparatuses. They challenge the role of the viewer in the perception of an artwork. As a result, the viewer has begun to play an important role in my work, aspects of which do not exist without their involvement.

My work has been influenced by a variety sources. Gerhard Richter is an artist that has been a constant inspiration in my work, especially his early paintings and sculptures. The work of David Hockney has also been inspirational, specifically his photography and recent paintings. My current work has additionally been influenced by scientific sources. I have made contact with an optical physicist, which has greatly informed my practice.
